Nickel is one of the key minerals in electric vehicle batteries, and Indonesia is looking to scale up production to meet skyrocketing demand–but questions remain over how to manage mine waste. Investors see mines that dump mine waste into the ocean as increasingly risky, while developers and governments are being forced to slow down plans. That’s kept tens of millions of tonnes of mine waste out of the Coral Triangle, at least temporarily.
