Why is the Ditch Ocean Dumping Campaign focused on Credit Suisse?

Credit Suisse underwrites mining companies that are dumping or plan to dump millions of tonnes of toxic mine waste into the ocean, putting biodiversity, endangered species and Indigenous communities at risk.

Dirty. Unnecessary. Wrong. Mine waste decimates marine habitat and threatens endangered species. The outdated practice has been phased out in many parts of the world due to harmful and often irreversible impacts on coral reefs, marine life, and coastal livelihoods.

Credit Suisse’s recently updated policy now includes a prohibition on financing for mine waste dumping into all marine environments, not just shallow waters. However, it includes a new loophole that allows for dumping in the absence of other alternatives. This opens the door for new mines that will use the harmful practice.

It’s time for Credit Suisse to Ditch Ocean Dumping once and for all.
