Presentation at the 2005 People’s Oil and Gas Summit: Toxics in Our Communities

The presentation decribes how liquids and gases move through the soil, and explains how contaminants can be transported both downward through the soil column, but also up to the surface, where they may be released into the air. The effects of oilfield contaminants, primarily salts, on soil and plants are also discussed.  The various methods of storing and disposing of oilfield wastes (e.g., pits, ponds, landfills, landfarms) and the potential hazards associated with the various methods are addressed.  And finally, the presentation ends with an overview of soil remediation methods for various types of oilfield wastes.
