Presentation at the 2005 People’s Oil and Gas Summit: Toxics in Our Communities
This presentation addresses some of the questions that arise when people want to know if they’ve been exposed to toxic chemicals, and explains why there are often no clear answers to these questions. The presentation offers a critical view of the current scientific methods used to determine chemical toxicity and links with human health effects. In light of the poor body of scientific studies linking chemicals with health effects, the presentation provides information to help people better understand how chemicals enter the body, and also that there are some groups, such as children, that are more susceptible to chemicals than others. The presentation ends with the idea that when there is doubt or lack of information on chemical toxicity, scientists, policy makers and society should be taking a precautionary approach, instead of allowing the widespread use of these chemicals in our communities.
