Read the Financial Times story here: Big US gas producers are methane super emitters, environmental groups’ data shows.
For 10 years, Earthworks has been using hand-held, state-of-the-art optical gas imaging cameras that can capture pollution the naked eye cannot see.
We have a new tool at our disposal: satellites.
Over the last year, Earthworks and Gas Leaks have monitored and analyzed data from Carbon Mapper satellite flyovers.
We found 20 super-emitter events. That’s defined by the EPA as 100 kilograms per hour, or the equivalent to the same pollution emitted after driving 7,130 miles in the average-sized gasoline powered car…every hour. That’s a lot of harm to the climate.
The Financial Times verified the data and the companies responsible.
The Trump administration has been attacking the very methane rules that would help prevent this. It’s CRITICAL for Governors from oil and gas producing states to step up to take action — looking at you, Colorado, New Mexico, Pennsylvania & Texas.
