Background: On April 28th, the US Senate passed a Congressional Review Act with bipartisan support to reinstate the Environmental Protection Agency’s Obama-era methane pollution safeguards, following the previous administration’s efforts to weaken the rules.
Statement from Lauren Pagel, Earthworks Policy Director:
“We thank Congress for this first step towards controlling oil and gas methane pollution, but reinstating 2016 rules is not enough. After four years of Trump policies and industry delays, bolder action is urgently needed.
“To prevent a climate crisis President Biden must direct the EPA to use the full force of the Clean Air Act to cut oil and gas methane pollution 65% by 2025.”
