Today, EPA Region 6 recommended the U.S. approve Texas GulfLink, a massive offshore oil export project proposed in Brazoria County, Texas that could be the largest of its kind. This recommendation stands in stark contrast to the EPA’s stated commitment to stand against environmental racism and tackle the climate crisis. Read more in our press release.
Rodney Brown, Texas Gulf Coast Campaigner at Earthworks, said:
“This is not the first time the EPA has advanced new oil export projects at the expense of frontline communities and climate action.
The EPA is once again turning a blind eye to the impact of pollution, which crosses political, municipal, racial and class boundaries in this country. Instead of advancing equity, this decision will only lower the quality of life for every person on the Texas coast, disproportionately impacting communities of color at and below the federal poverty line.
“The EPA cannot simultaneously approve this project and ensure environmental justice and climate change are being considered. The only way to protect overburdened communities is by stopping new fossil fuel projects from being built and prioritizing the transition to a clean energy future.”
