WASHINGTON — Today, U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright announced the approval of an export authorization for Venture Global’s proposed CP2 liquefied “natural” gas (LNG) export project in Southwest Louisiana. The announcement comes as the Trump administration tries to boost LNG exports, even though exporting huge quantities of U.S. gas abroad increases domestic fuel and electricity prices, worsens the climate crisis, and further pollutes the air and water of communities on the frontlines of LNG.
Statement from Kelsey Crane, Senior Policy Advocate at Earthworks:
“Approving another mega-polluting fossil fuel project in the Gulf South makes it clear this administration is only interested in allowing the people who get rich off of harming communities with oil and gas pollution to be in charge of U.S. energy policies. Louisianans whose health, safety, and livelihoods are impacted by this decision were counting on the Department of Energy to stop the injustices they face every day and reject CP2. This approach to energy policy is not in the public’s best interest, and will cause serious harm across the country.”
