“Once again, polluters win over public health, with the 242 to 186 vote against the BREATHE Act today. Peer-reviewed science shows the oil and gas industry’s air pollution threatens our communities and climate. But thanks to a Clean Air Act loophole inserted just for the oil and gas industry, we are powerless to control much of that pollution.
Our policymakers should not pick winners and losers among fossil fuel polluters. Oil and gas companies should play by the same rules as all other industries, especially when their special treatment threatens our health. Congressman Polis’ BREATHE act would have applied these rules to the oil and gas industry equally, better protecting communities and climate in the process.
But even with the BREATHE Act, we must remember that avoiding catastrophic climate change requires a complete switch to a renewable energy economy as soon as humanly possible.”
