Growing volumes of solid waste are processed and disposed of at municipal landfills, a practice that can increase the levels of toxics in landfill leachate.
As a result of increased drilling, many landfills are being built or expanding in New York, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Texas, West Virginia, and other states.
Inconsistent regulations between states has led to waste being “shopped around” and ultimately disposed of in inadequate landfills that are not able to properly dispose of industrial, hazardous, and even radioactive waste.
