December 1st marked the end of the fifth and what was supposed to be the final round of Global Plastic Treaty negotiations in Busan, South Korea. Instead, the talks ended without agreement. That means progress has been, again, derailed. It also means an additional session will take place around the same time next year. In yet another slap in the face to fenceline, frontline and environmental justice communities, the US withdrew its support for plastics production limits.The Biden administration has once again catered to petrochemical interests.

The fact remains that a majority of countries around the world support a comprehensive strategy to reduce global plastic production. There is scientific and community consensus around the threat posed by continued plastic production.

Swift and ambitious action is crucial to address the plastic production and pollution crisis. Communities across the United States know that extraction and plastic production must be halted to keep our planet and people safe. Local and international advocacy will continue. The fight continues.
