Background: On June 10th, the US House Energy and Commerce Committee advanced a resolution authored by Representative Diana DeGette that would reinstate the Environmental Protection Agency’s methane pollution safeguards using the Congressional Review Act, following the previous administration’s efforts to weaken the rule.
Statement from Lauren Pagel, Earthworks Policy Director:
“It is important that Congressional champions on climate do their part to undo four years of reckless Trump administration policies on methane gas pollution. But President Biden’s administration must also do their part to fulfill their commitment to bolder action by using the full force of the Clean Air Act to cut methane 65% by 2025.
“Next week’s public listening sessions at EPA will make clear that now is the time for solutions to match the scale of the climate crisis and remedy the harms suffered by residents living next to oil and gas operations.”
