“The science is clear on the oil and gas industry and methane — they are spewing too much of it into the air, worsening climate change and harming public health.
This week a study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences fingered the oil and gas industry as the key factor behind the increase in global methane since 2000. Last month, NASA found 24 of the 25 worst methane polluters contributing to our nation’s biggest methane hotspot are oil and gas facilities.
This combines with peer-reviewed science showing that air toxics like benzene emitted in combination with oil and gas methane pollution are associated with increased negative health impacts, including cancer.
It’s time for the House Science Committee to stop ignoring science and support the EPA’s common sense standards to limit methane pollution from currently unregulated oil and gas infrastructure.”
