Our work in Montana includes holding mining companies and government agencies accountable for clean up of severe mine pollution at the Zortman Landusky, Beal Mountain and Montana Tunnels Mines, protecting important ecosystems from irresponsible mining proposals, and advocating for land use designations that protect treasured places.
Earthworks partners with the Fort Belknap Indian Community, Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes and conservation allies in our work to hold Hecla Mining Company’s CEO accountable under the Montana “bad actor” law for clean-up at the Zortman Landusky Mine, and to challenge irresponsible mining proposals that will harm the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness and threatened grizzly bears and bull trout.
We also partner with Montana Trout Unlimited and Montana Environmental Information Center to protect Montana’s iconic Smith River from a mining plan that threatens the health and future of the watershed with acid mine drainage and dewatering.
