As soon as tomorrow, the Pennsylvania House of Representatives could vote to approve Senate Bill 652 (SB652), a dangerous law that criminalizes peaceful protest of pipelines and other facilities deemed ‘critical infrastructure’.

If approved, the new law would have a terrifying chilling effect on our constitutional right to protest. The law is modeled after draft legislation promoted heavily by the ultra-right-wing American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), and turns peaceful protest into a 2nd degree felony, on par with sexual assault or aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

In its current form, the bill even makes organizing a protest a 2nd degree felony with its conspiracy provisions. The current version of the bill even imposes harsher penalties for trespass than for vandalism – meaning the clear intention of the legislation is to silence dissent.

SB652 is a dangerous threat to our democracy.

Take Action: Call your state house representative NOW and urge them to protect free speech and vote NO on SB652!

When you are connected, please give them your name and zip code. Then tell them:

I am calling [house rep] to urge them to vote NO on Senate Bill 652. The proposed bill threatens free speech and our democracy. If passed, the bill would make peaceful protesting – or even organizing a protest – a crime on par with sexual assault or aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. There are already laws on the books against trespass and vandalism – it is clear that this law is specifically designed to chill legitimate public opposition to infrastructure projects. Vote NO on SB652!
