“Governor Wolf’s commitment to reducing statewide greenhouse gases will make Pennsylvania a safer, wealthier and healthier place to live. But to make a real difference, he must recognize that the oil and gas industry is a key source of methane and other pollution, and that its continued expansion makes meeting climate goals difficult if not impossible.

Governor Wolf’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is currently considering new limits on air pollution from thousands of oil and gas facilities throughout the state. Where those draft rules stand today, unfortunately, would fall far short of what the Governor and Pennsylvania need to do to reduce the state’s contribution to climate change. The new rules must go further to include the tens of thousands more conventional wells currently exempted, and specifically target methane pollution from all oil and gas sources.

Reducing pollution from existing facilities is an important step, but it is not enough. To truly address the climate crisis Governor Wolf must say no to all new gas wells, processing plants, and pipelines.”
