Come work for Earthworks as our Policy Associate! This job is a one-year position, with the potential to extend, pending funding.
The Policy Associate will work with the Senior Policy Counsel and Policy Director to advance Earthworks’ energy and mining policy agenda before Congress, executive agencies, allied organizations and the public. The Policy Associate will be closely involved with all aspects of our campaign to advocate for pro-environment mining reform, including research, outreach, campaign and legislative activities. The Associate will also join our climate and energy campaign, linking oil and gas impacted communities with state and federal decision-makers.
A dynamic advocacy organization headquartered in Washington, DC, with a mostly remote workforce of 30 people across 8 states, Earthworks protects communities and the environment from the adverse impacts of fracking and mining. We reform government policies, improve corporate practices, influence investment decisions, and encourage responsible materials sourcing and consumption. We ensure that communities’ voices and concerns are heard in the corridors of power, from the nation’s capital to state houses and local levels.
The metals mining industry, also known as the hardrock mining industry, is one of the dirtiest, most polluting industries in the world. Yet the 1872 Mining Law – that governs hardrock mining on public lands in the United States – remains virtually unchanged despite dramatic changes in mining practices. Our renewable energy future will require additional mineral resources, and this position will help ensure that those minerals are more responsibly sourced.
The Policy Associate will:
Earthworks is a small organization therefore all staff and contractors will be required to provide assistance on organization-wide projects outside of their area of focus as needed. The position also requires participation in program and organizational planning activities that range from regular meetings and conference calls, to annual planning, to strategic planning.
Excellent analytical, writing, and oral communication skills, as well as the ability to work with a team and independently are required. Must be able to handle multiple issues, projects, and deadlines. 1-2 years experience in advocacy, public policy or campaigns is desired. Some knowledge of the legislative and regulatory processes, and prior legislative advocacy experience is a plus. Familiarity with environmental issues, media experience, and commitment to public interest work are also preferred, but not required.

Position Details/How To Apply
The salary for this full-time one year position is competitive for small to medium non-profits, ranging from $48K to 56K depending on experience. Benefits include full health and dental coverage for the employee and their partner/family (plus an employer funded HSA), paid vacation, and the flexibility to work from home some days. This position reports to the Senior Policy Counsel and must be based in Washington, DC.
